Having issues with power on my 98 V70R and the AutoZone tester revealed alternator as the cause. Primed with a previously ordered part from FCP, I pulled my VR today only to find my old one has the LRC and the new one doesn't. Is it possible to use the small VR on a LRC type? Can you leave it unconnected?
I think this post from Chuck is confirming that no, you can't swap a small VR into an alternator designed to use larger one. But I haven't tried it myself.Chuck W wrote: ↑16 Jan 2019, 07:45 I've replaced the brushes in those before.
Actually just did it when we swapped the motor in the wife's '97 GLT. Swapped alternators a while back, due to a noisy bearing, and installed one of the smaller regulators in it(not having looked at the old one on the car). After the car didn't like that I swapped the old regulator with the very worn (short) brushes in it, and just kept an eye out for a battery light.
I ordered some brushes and "rebuilt" an old regulator I had from an extra alt, and installed that when we swapped motors. I'd found a video online about replacing the brushes, and it was easy enough to do.
Going to replace the brushes in the extra regulator as a spare.
(I'd have to dig up where I got the brushes)
