My machinist does great stuff. Take a look at youTube channel "fiatnutz" There's a specific grain interval that provides a very smooth look on alloy heads. A rougher look may be a worn milling blade....or be incorrectly set

Just stealing some valves from my VVIS head. Diameter of the valves is shared with the turbo head (if it even IS a turbo head)

Next a light lapping and install of the valves tomorrow.

10 valves installed; Volvo make it really hard to reach the collets (valve keepers) so I devised a handsfree system

Head with turbo manifold and intake manifold is about to be bolted on. I've spotted at least 3 vacuum hoses leading to the turbo which are cut so I really need a vacuum hose layout. I'm putting all new vacuum hoses in as many locations as I can but I can't believe in the myriad of vacuum hoses in extremely inaccessible places like the one leading to what looks like a fuel regulator near the steering coupling (this is a RHD car)

I can see why this forum is full of P80 turbo owners (and now I'm one of them 8-) )

I interpret that the VVIS head is non-turbo; do you know about the sodium-filled exhaust valves in the turbo, Mike?

I had a change of mind and used the turbo head as it had been cleaned up and exhaust seats were cut by the previous owner. I didn't put all the turbo exhaust valves to use as some of them looked awful. I used around 5 of them.

The turbo valves used to have a unique part number according to Vadis but afew years ago they superceded to the same number as non turbo so Volvo must have done a switch perhaps through lack of supply of the sodium ones. Today Volvo dealers will hand you a standard valve.

Any takers on the vacuum hose layout?

The turbo has 3 lines running off of it.
1. Wastegate = yellow, goes to TCV.
2. Bypass valve = line goes to the front of the intake manifold just under the IAC.
3. Bottom of the turbo = Red, goes to TCV.

The other line of the TCV is blue and goes to the intake tube.

Thanks Robert I don't believe I saw a TCV in the rear but I have one in the workshop. Does it attach to the air cleaner box as with the later cars?

Yep, the TCV attaches to the air cleaner box.

Thanks Erik and all so far for the enlightenment. :P I'm hoping this thread can be a go-to for others considering buying one of these or a similar P80 turbo. I'll keep posting as I get it near completion.

BTW I have 4 bolt control arms which, according to FCP's lists seem to be factory fitted.

Fitted head today and forgot how silly Volvo's early (pre '99) accessory bracket design is. If you don't fit the thermostat housing before fitting the head you will have the dandiest time reaching the bottom thermostat housing torx 40 bolt, even after removing the power steering pump (all 8 bolts!!)
That held me up by almost 1.5 hrs as I removed the intake manifold and then dropped my torx 40 bit down the accessory bracket.

Used the Permatex 51813 anaerobic sealant which went on nicely. It's gooier then Volvo's sealant which I like very much. Turbo was loosely bolted on. I don't know how I'm going to attach the turbo drain pipe because that angle gear blocks all access to the turbo from underneath....I guess the modern AWD cars must be as difficult to gain access to. Photos are on their way.
