Unfortunately, the issues were not resolved. Time to move on to connections on other modules. Most common symptom is lack of readings from the Dashboard. This can be with or without warning lights, such as SRS, "i", or the non-skid symbol The stereo and climate control continue to run, but the ability to change settings will come and go. Curiously, and I believe this is important, when the stereo and climate are not responding to changes, it will sometimes remember the buttons I pushed. When communications are restored, it will cycle through the sequence I pressed.
Sometimes the power windows quit working. I haven't checked the power seats, so I don't know about them. On some occasions, the wipers will come on even though the switch is off. Because of multitude of modules affected, I'm leaning towards the CEM or the connections to it.

Troubleshoot Heat Soak ECM, BCM, CEM, & TCM
Looking at the diagrams of the CAN Bus for my car, it appears that the DIM is at the end of a branch, which might allow everything else to function. I know on my F-150, the AC, stereo and power windows are in line after the instrument cluster. They do not work with the cluster removed.vtl wrote:It could be a bad DIM module, it makes low-speed CAN bus communication hard or impossible. Try to take instrument cluster out and check if non-DIM functions restored.
If all other accessories work with the DIM removed, I may have trouble ascertaining whether that pinpointed the problem. The "dead" Odo, Spedo, and LED screens are the first indicator that there is a problem. The AC/Stereo/Window issue is not always present and will come and go as I'm driving. The AC and Stereo don't cut out. They just become non-responsive to changes in settings. I guess I can run it that way for a few days and see what happens. I'll only be out a little time.

After taking out DIM CAN bus should be restored since it goes through DIM and taking it out breaks network. To restore you need to short 2 twisted pairs on the DIM's connector. green with greed and white with white.vtl wrote:Try to take instrument cluster out and check if non-DIM functions restored.
If you have questions about Volvo firmware ask me. I may know an answer
Thanks. That makes sense.
I should add that the previous owner told me that he had replaced the power seat module because it got wet (window left open). If the PSM got wet then I probably should assume the window module also got wet. I'll add checking modules and their connections to my list of things to check

Problem solved !! (Fingers crossed). I sent an email to XeMoDex who suggested I check for corrosion on the CEM. However I misread their response and checked the ECM and found clean and dry connections. I also checked the connections on the DIM, and the seat and door modules. All were fine. I reread the XeMoDex email and then checked the module they suggested, the CEM. I did find some corrosion on a couple of the contacts on one of the large plugs (the one on the top right) on the CEM. It was blue/green, consistent with corrosion on connections that contain copper. I didn't see any signs of water intrusion other than the little bit of corrosion. I cleaned the connections with DeOxit and, after a couple more issues caused by me failing to fully seat another plug on the CEM, everything seems to be working fine now.
Any suggestions on keeping this from happening again? Stabilant or DeoxIT L260 grease?

Some pictures of these modules and connectors would be great.
In the marine environment we always fight corrosion from water and salt water. There are a variety of products we use on electric connections ..if you have a west marine store near you the staff there usually know their stuff

OK so I have a similar problem on my 02 s60 awd
This car is not on the road yet, head gasket issues from prev owner
The dim was not responsive from the start, found prev owner unplugged it, very strange
After original dim was plugged in, door locks, windows etc all worked fine. but dim never displayed anything but check engine.
I was able to get another dim from prev owner who had a parts car, and put it in, and no display either, I think power to dim is not present, even though there is one light.
One clue, I did find a small bunch of wires under steering wheel, 2 wires twisted together, another few cut, Maybe they had remote starter?
Could the hasty removal of a remote start device cause can bus to be crazy?
After I do head and get it running it will be easier to determine issues.
I would also be interested in seeing can live data, I have another post with more info about this car and issues
Another hint, My son did find sunroof drain clogged up and causing water inside car on passenger side, maybe there iss omething electrical that got wet because of this?

Dashboard Volvo 2002-2003 model years are affected by factory defect. You can repair or replace it. For 2004 model year there is another problem (not good CEM) but symptoms the same sometimes.

my 2002 has a lot of spurious comm errors, dim was no good.
Being repaired now, may make all things start working.
About to trace violet wire from fan, any ideas of its next stop after fan?
