Russ, that is the best yet!

Steve, re-tap the holes! They will work for 100K!

cn90, Volvo makes turbo and NA engines. NA has much higher compression ratio. They use different plugs. This thread is about plugs for a Volvo NA engine. Actually it's about what is causing the black deposits on the OP's plugs, but that is of course irrelevant at this point. :D

Erik, where are you when we need you!

Matt, this is the best dang thread on this forum in months. I just showed the latest to my wife and she is    all the way back into the kitchen.

I too drive short trips to work and back (roughly 3 miles each way), and my 240 dl's NGK plugs look like that as well--carbon black soot, not greasy. On some advice, I replaced the thermostat and cleaned the new plugs that I put in about 3 weeks ago, and it still doesn't seem like the car is running at 100%.

This is a post that I started, but I haven't found the answer yet:https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=72628

Since your car has OBD II, you can always get the codes read at an Auto Zone for free. That might give you a better clue to what's happening inside your engine.

dosbricks,

I hope you know that Volvo PN 8642660 (spark plugs) is used for virtually all engines with 5 cylinders ranging from 850, S70, S60 etc., turbo and no-turbo models. The Volvo OEM plug is basically re-branded Bosch copper and that is it. It is $2/each if Bosch copper, but $5/each when the Volvo logo is imprinted on the Bosch plug.

The black deposit in the original thread was already addressed, likely leaking fuel injector or valve stem seals.

cn90, here is link to 8642660:
https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... 60-8642660
It's a three prong plug. Notice that every vehicle listed on the fitment guide is an NA? Are the Volvos you own NA? Have you used this plug in your turbos? Does Bosch offer this three prong plug developed by Volvo for 2.4 NA engines for $2 each? Note that in 1997 the 850 GLT became a turbo--do you see that vehicle on the list?--no.

On oem Volvo spark plugs for non-turbo engines(set of 5) is stamped EXL turbo.
Oem Volvo spark plugs(set of 5) are different for turbo & non turbo models. :!:
