The original MAF could be just fine, hopefully you kept it because misha is right, aftermarket MAF = very bad idea.

It is a well known problem on these cars that the MAF connector can get messed up. E.g. from www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=42649 some typically great advice from guru jimmy57: "... spray a cleaner on the MAF connector and then plug/unplug a few times and then cable tie the wiring harness to MAF to the MAF body. The harness being loose was causing erratic signal or no signal at times. It's worth a try since it is easy and cheap. You can use WD-40 or other penetrating spray as the cleaner."

Cleaning a Maf with wd40???
I wouldn't do that!

Always good to actually read the post misha ;), jimmy57 is crystal clear in discussing the connector, not the interior of the housing where the actual MAF sensor is located ...

Do your best to get an OEM MAF.

The wire harness plug is a not so common issue with the MAF plug. Many of them have a zip tie on them.

Do get the PCV kit and replace that ASAP. Most people pull way more off than you need to. I usually jack the manifold up high enough to get my hands on the oil trap box and clean that stuff out of the block and close it back up. The last NA I did took me 1 hour and 56
