9997020 though is nonstandard, not much/any choice on the market for this one.
I recall that, for other models (V40?), the same counterhold is used along with a spacer which compensates the smaller diameter of the rack. Is that the 9997021 spacer on your list?

The VIDA instruction says to use spacer PN 9997021. Was there deflection limiter in yours?

On the V70 2000 the steering gear was at 277.000km and still strong with no leaks. Inner & Outer tie rods were done, no problem after 30.000km. I know bad roads and pot holes tend to kill faster the front end...
If the rebuild comes with the inner and outer rods might be worth too, but i believe it is a lot of work

I'm not sure. I think there was a white plastic part on the rack which would stop the sideways motion of the rack, limiting, urm, steering deflection. That could have been it.

Anyway, if you look at this VCC document <https://accessories.volvocars.com/Insta ... 3-)%202017> (instruction no. 31373967, Version 1.2) describing the installation of a steering deflection limiter on a V40, step 19, that's what I meant: tool 9997021 is a distance ring of sorts, allowing the use of the counterhold on the rack of the V40, which must be smaller in diameter than that of the V70, as we did not need it on the 2002 V70 of mine. That's why I mentioned it, I thought you would not need it.

It is then possible to homemade a spacer/sleeve/insert using pvc or cooper pipe material as a buffer against damage to the machined surface of the gear shaft. And then placing a grip type plier to simulate counterhold 9997020.

Would CTA tool work as a counterhold using a spacer/sleeve/insert? DrDan what is the (ID) diameter of the tool?

I estimate that the inner diameter is about 28mm
(the two parts of the tool don't combine to form perfectly cylindrical cavity, so the diameter can't be measured directly).

Using copper tubing is probably a good idea, too soft to damage the surface, but won't crack like plastic.

Preparing for the task, wheels are off.
Perpetual repairs, I may need to reboot and grease inner CV at passenger side axle too.

LEMFORDER arm is sculpted but the ball joint is substantially larger than the OE TRW.

Counterhold installed. 1" copper coupler sliced into two pieces provides buffer against the vise grip bite.

Is the 2" ivory color sleeve over the shaft, butting with inner tie rod, deflection limiter - device prevents tires from rubbing the wheel well liner from over steering?

Does the deflection limiter cracks or split when unscrewing/screwing inner tie rod under torque? Here is a pix from our '97 850 (from 2012) where the deflection limiter is missing, is it:
