Now, back to business. I swapped the cap, rotor, wires and and fuel pump and injector relais from the 94 to the troublesome 96. Now it seems to work flawlessly, runs great under boost (that TME exhaust makes a noticeable difference).
What is left to do is
a) hope that it stays this way and
b) try to sort out the problematic part by swapping single parts between cars.
I will update if I can duplicate the problem in the 94 when installing all parts I removed from the 96.
