2005 XC70 Smell of gas (New to Volvo's)

Did you fix this? Was it the sender unit leaking?

It is the sending unit seal but the parts are on order from ipd. If they arrive before next weekend, I'll get it done then.

I didn’t re-read the whole thread but were you the one needing the socket to remove the top ring?
I have it & can send it to you so all you need is possibly the sealing ring. I think the socket alone is like $50.

Thanks, Pete! I went ahead and bought the tool so I have it in the future. I also bought 2 of the seals and several of the body trim clips (in case one breaks when I get back in there).

Ok, it's fixed but not the one I thought.

I took the old seal out and saw nothing really wrong with it. There was a fair amount of dirt and grit in there which took a while to clean up around the sending unit "lid". I marked the index of the sending unit for the tightening side so it would be ensured seated correctly. Once it was all back together with a new seal I sent my wife to the gas station to fill it up. When she returned, I noticed that the top of the sending unit was wet again, though not completely drowning in gas as before. With a full tank, I dried everything up with a towel only to see gas seeping through the little triangles in the extruding part on the lid of the sending unit. Ugh.

We then drove the car for more than 2 hours in a loop around the area to burn down the level in the tank and I proceeded to apply the same JB Weld epoxy solution to this that other have to the fuel pump. Clearly, there is a crack underneath this molded section of the plastic.

We filled the car back up again today after letting it fully cure and I'm pleased to report that all is well.

You can see in the attached pics the one that is dry is before we filled the tank with just the new seal and the second is with the epoxy dried and in place.

That’s a bummer. I hope your JB holds up for a long time. If not, your tool will have become half as expensive to own

Yeah, I layered it and packed into the little spaces very well so I am rather confident that it will be fine.

You can also push your gas out of front of the car by putting 12 volts onto the pump and pumping i]t into a gas can.

I pumped about gallons in 10 minutes
