The flash arrestor is there to help keep any oil/vapor from contaminating the inside of the dist cap. You have a cam seal sitting right behind there, and they do leak as they age.
Oh that's interesting. I guess i would have to get one then because my car doesnt have that. I was very careful when taking the distributor cap off too because i knew there was supposed to be that inner metal cap.

Do you know what the black cap is for that covers the distributor cap, made of plastic, color black?
I’ve been driving a Volvo long before anyone ever paid me to drive one.
That's probably because I've been driving one since 2015 and nobody has offered to pay me yet.

I wondered about the black cap too. I believe Bosch provides a new one with a new cap. I bought a non-Bosch cap and considered tra sfering the old one, but found it was cracked. I just left it off.

Hi,

Yeah i bought a Standard Motors part and it looks identical to the old Bosch part, even same color, just didnt come with a new black distributor cap cover.
maybe the Engineers were paranoid when they specified that cover :D
Maybe it protects it better from the heat. Who knows though, another oddity with this car.
