1997 850 GLT

I replaced the bulbs in the center console and glove box. The center console bulbs include the cig. lighter, front ashtray, rear ashtray, and shifter. I could not find the ashtrays bulb (same bulb for front and rear ashtray) online so I got it from the local dealer.

The glove box bulb (182055-4, $1.72 each) is on the left in the attached photo. I got this from dealer but other posts indicate you can get this online.

The bulb for both ashtrays (3545170-7, $5.17 each) is on the right in the attached photo.

The bulb in the center is for the cig. lighter and the shifter position indicator.

98 S70.....about to change my instrument cluster bulbs and just want to make sure I understand correctly.

I've looked through this whole thread and I have not seen it explicitly stated, but I believe all the instrument cluster bulbs are just wedged into their bases. So I can just pull the old bulb from each base and press in the new one.....do I have that right?

I am used to rewiring the switch bulbs using the Radio Shack bulbs, but this looks a lot less complicated.

Thanks,
Calvin

VCA wrote:You don't have to pull the console to change that one. It's part of the cigarette lighter assembly. If you get your hand underneath the panel (so your hand is between panel and carpet), and pull gently out and slightly up, the panel will pop out. The bulb is Volvo 942327, more affectionally known as a 2721 bulb.
So, on my 2000 S70 NA, I need to replace this bulb also. The bulb that shines on the rear seat floor area.

Maybe I have fat fingers, but I can't slip my hand between the panel and carpet. I took out the ashtray itself, and I can grab onto the bump outs for the hinges, and pull. However, it seems to want more than just "gentle" force. I wonder what I'm doing wrong. :(

Do I have to loosen any screws or anything? :?:

I supposed I'll have to take the entire console apart to change this one bulb. :(

UPDATE: I ended up taking the entire center console off. Instructions are exactly like what is posted on http://volvospeed.com/Repair/SV70console.php

I can see how, if you can get your hand in between the panel and console, you can pop-off the rear ashtray panel to get access to the bulb.

However, taking the whole console off is so easy and its much nicer to be able to fiddle with the whole thing on the living room floor, rather than in the back seat of the car. The wire connector for the rear ashtray light is actually over near the parking brake, so there's no way you'd be able to disconnect it if you didn't take out the entire console.

While you might get a hit here, I would think they might have an answer for this at the 740 forum. https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... um.php?f=2
