...and you can buy individual taps, of the correct hardened steel, for about $5 at Lowe’s

I like the boltbtrick but if zombies had confiscated the taps. I would use a Dremel to make the taper on the bolt

Kobalt brand taps probably good into aluminum for several jobs. On a critical engine part I would buy a new one

Agreed. And the bare bones starter set is probably $25.

But really, if one is going to buy more than a single tap it can be well worth the investment to spend a couple more bucks on a nice(r) set with a range of sizes.

Thank you everyone.
I bought one of those heli-coil kits online and it worked.

Another thing I am learning about working on an older car, is all the plastic stuff is brittle. I had to replace the coolant tank (already cracked, I just helped it along) and the radiator (same deal).

And the rubber hoses just disintegrate.

After all that, and re seating the cam cover (major oil leak, I think one of the cam seals was not set properly) she runs great. No more coolant or oil leaks. No over hearing. So far all seems good...

Except a P1618 code...

So, this is what I accomplished because of this site:

1. Head gasket replacement
2. Timing belt replacement
3. Water pump replacement
4. Valve job
5. Radiator replacement

I won't lie. I am surprised the car ran after I was done.

Now what do I do with all these left over bolts? :D

They work great across the end of your driveway (positioned standing up, head down) when you have neighbors that keep blocking it - they tend to pick them up =p

The P1618 could be CAN BUS between Tranny and Engine control module or I believe *cringe* it may be able to be caused by a bad ABS module.

Try making sure you have a good (and charged ~12.8V+) battery and then clear it. If it was started with a crappy or low battery it may trigger all kinds of interesting codes.

If you get VIDA + a DICE box you can read from the transmission module exactly what it has seen and if there are any current codes. If you changed the ATF (DEX/MERC?) you're going to want to run an adaption and a counter reset.
