I like to use the cam lock to make it easier to preload the VVT. That can be a little tricky to do without turning the camshaft forward.

Use the cam lock to save yourself the frustration. I used it after I bolted the cover down when I did my NA can swap. You want to make sure they are at least close to being in the proper orientation though, to avoid putting valves into pistons.

I suggest just investing (or borrowing) the tools to compress the cam cover for reinstalling all of the cover bolts.

People do it without the tool, but people also wind up asking how to repair stripped threads in the head after trying to install the cover without it. You're compressing valve springs and the threads in the AL head aren't always up to the task if you get aggressive on tightening.

Yup, get the cam tool set with those cam cover tools on eBay or Amazon. They're pretty cheap. Not the greatest quality, but they work if you don't do the job too frequently.

Will do. Thanks guys. I'm justva little nervous about my first head rebuild ever. But I have 2 wagons in need of head rebuilds waiting after this so the next one should go much quicker.

DO NOT crank the little 7mm bolts of the cam holding tool down. I snapped one off inside the camshaft.

Finger tight, no tools

It’s the lugs that hold the cams, not the m6 screws
