Timing question 2002 V70 X/C

Post by Mike Langlois »

Greetings All,
I was hoping for some clarification on the VVT timing on my 2002 V70 X/C. I am replacing the timing/belt as the last fine tuning issue after a Major Overhaul, modification and Tuning (boosted HP into the 250 range). I am following the Volvo Service procedure step by step and have this nagging issue. After changing the belt, reinstalling the VVT hub and rotating the engine 2 times the Exhaust timing mark is still one tooth advanced; where it is set during the VVT install procedure.

The timing mark on the Intake side is lined up.

And the Tensioner is set correct for 68 degree weather.

The next service procedure step has the timing marks lined up and the tensioner correct. My timing marks are exactly where they were when the belt was installed; Ex mark 1 tooth advanced. I am not sure how this could change, as the belt is cogged and once set at one tooth advanced, it should stay there. As noted, the service procedure was followed and the VVT was kept tensioned until the timing gear bolts were torqued. I'm experienced at this and feel like I am missing something.

Found the issue: 1 tooth BEFORE the mark, not After the mark....

Sorry I didn’t post on this yesterday, Mike. Yes , you got it correct second time. You usually pop a p0014 code after a few starts if this isn’t set right
