2004 c70

Post by Matt3691 »

Hi,

My wife's car is a 2004 c70. I had noticed some blue drips near the front passenger side front tire. Right in front. First thought was window cleaner but after closer inspection it's radiator fluid.

After looking all over it appears to be coming from the lower hose of the pressure reservoir tank. I tightened it up but would still see occasional blue dots. Today it belched out a bunch. Also, my electric fan never seems to come on. Seems to me I'm having an overheat but the temp guage doesn't go into the overheat range.

I've read up a little bit but if someone can handhold a little bit I would certainly appreciate it.

Here is what I know. Plastic reservoir bottle seems to be fine. Hoses are fine. Water is blue. I plan to start by turning on the air cond to see if the fan kicks on....will you confirm?
If not lift out the relays and jump the yellow/yellow white wires to ground to see if they come on....will you confirm? If the runs than best bet is the temp sensor under the t-stats even though the guage seems to be working???

Seems like it must be overheating but I don't get it because the guage reads normal. Also, can someone confirm which kind of coolant because I seem to be confused on that. Never seen blue coolant. Can I just use Preston from the auto parts store or does it require special stuff.

Thanks,
Matt

In the cooler climates it’s not unusual for the fan to not come in at all in fall. Turning the AC on should kick the fan on , yes

The hose and bottle are at system pressure so any leaks will spew coolant even at normal temperatures.

Don’t buy cheap hoses. There is a lot of junk out there. Good brand names from the past mean nothing today. Rein and Volvo are the only two I put on my cars

Turning on the AC will engage the low-speed fan, but that doesn't guarantee that the high-speed fan is working/engaging when it should.

Also, please don't use the Preston Auto part store coolant. This car needs the Volvo Blue stuff if you top it off. FCP usually has it for a decent price.

Always puzzled by Volvo supposedly needing a " special " coolant. I mean I know they are a " special car ", but are they built with " special " aluminum ?
I think any good GO5 stuff is just fine. Good enough for a Maserati. Much more important to flush the system every couple of years, imho.

Volvo modified their coolant a few years ago to add more and different inhibitors to reduce breakdown of the aluminum. I know others use cheaper brands and that is your choice. Are they better/worse I am no expert. I do however only use Volvo coolant in my cars. For the difference in cost, it is cheap insurance.

The car on this episode belched out half of the pressure tank so not just spots. Also, not sure if the fan has been working all through summer.

Can anyone confirm how to test the fan? Right now all I have done is confirm the fuse is good.

Do you want test the whole circuit from ECM to fan? or
Just to know if fan spins?

For the first one..
How fool it (car) to trigger the fan(s) without such tools? I need at least to know specific engine so i know which specific ECM you have.

How about just the fan for starters....but I believe it's a t5 with the low pressure turbo, does that sound right?

Yes, if that's possible without special tools. I believe it's a low pressure t5. Or just how to test the fan to spin.

Does the temp sensor have anything to do with it if the guage is saying it's normal? Or maybe it's saying it's normal but it's not.

My wife drives about 2 miles to work and back in city driving. Yesterday was cool out when it belched.
