Coolant on manual shift cable

Post by 99TurboBrick »

I had a heater core leak for the last 1.5 years that I just discovered. It's on me, as I had not tightened the T25 screw enough to attached the core to the pipes.

So, on top of coolant soaked carpet and underlayment, my worn manual shifter cable sheathing allowed coolant in, and it traversed most of the length of the cable, even through the firewall.

Anything I can do short of replacing the cable? Would soaking the heck out of it with something like WD-40 clean off this coolant? Coolant being very corrosive, I feel this should be addressed. Thanks.

Coolant shouldn't be corrosive. Preventing corrosion is part of it's job in the cooling system. I'd guess any crustiness is mostly dried coolant. If the cable is still functionally well, I'd leave it.... unless it would be easier to replace now rather than later.

Edit: Maybe the anti-corrosive properties require a sealed system?
