98 V70 T5 brake pedal sinks *SOLVED*

Post by valvolvo70 »

I've only been able to check master cylinder fluid level (good) and leaks (none), its dark. Driving yesterday and noticed the brake pedal gets soft occasionally as I stopped/slowed. Realized today that the brake pedal gets soft and sinks when TURNING RIGHT only? It will eventually stiffen with a few pumps. TEST: No brake pedal sinking when slowing to a stop driving straight or while slowing/turning left, just right turns, which can be challenge when pulling into a parking spot :o I haven't changed the fluid in a few years and its cold 30-40 F.

It could be a collapsing brake line on either side which is getting extended in turning. Inspect both front sides.

Time for new lines! Wet tire and concrete under the split hose.

**UPDATE took a week to get parts/bubble flare kit so I could cut and flare the V70 hard brake line today. Bit of a PITA but went well and NO LEAKS! Many years ago I had to run new hard break lines front to rear on a rusty 4runner actuator line, I posted my "pro tip" on a Toyota forum site and it worked well again today while hand bending (w/pliers) V70 front hard lines from radius to flat to radius again. If you don't have a break line bender or space is an issue, simply insert the appropriate diameter weed wacker line (.080) into the brake line prior to making bends. The weed wacker cord keeps the brake line walls from collapsing or kinking during the forming process. Make any size radius with your hands or tools like pliers! Thanks to jreed for his write up, came in handy.

Fantastic idea! I haven't had to mess with the hard lines on the Volvo.... what size hard lines do our cars use?

Thank you! Hard lines are 3/16" (4.7mm). I would recommend purchasing the flare nut wrenches to avoid having to cut/flare the hard line. Mine were rusted to sh*t (MI winters) so I had to cut.
