04 V70 occasional no crank

Post by Dave0304XC »

Hello- 2004 V70, 115K miles. About a month ago I was (out of town) and was driving here and there one day. Stopped at a place, and shut her off. Came out and car had dash lights, wipers, windows etc but would not crank. Just a click.

Had it towed to a "european" specialist, said I needed a new battery. Hmmm. With a new battery it started fine. Back home now and Have been driving it every day. Last week it did the same thing again. Dash lights but no crank. Towed to my local european (which I now learn is really just Audi / VW). Of course it cranked fine when they looked at it. They looked it over, said alternator was putting out 14.4 v, starter was cranking fine.

I can't have this thing towed every 3 weeks, any suggestions on this? Dave

Find a wire that goes to that contact on the starter, take it out, clean thoroughly (scratch with a thin screwdriver, use electric cleaner), put back.

if cleaning the small terminal doesn't work, try jumping between the 2 terminals on the starter, if it cranks over the problem is upstream, I would look at the ign switch. On my older volvo (740) I installed a push button to start the car, volvo ign swittch was too expensive for me.
I used a 12v feed from the battery POS to the small terminal with momentary switch in between and 15 amp inline fuse.
Hokey but it worked fine.

Dave. I think the P2 has the same starter bypass terminal the p80s do. I’ll check mine tomorrow
