2007 Volvo XC70 Not starting, please help!

Post by Amatoxc70 »

Hello! I need help, please. My 2007 Volvo XC70 with 195k miles stopped starting two days ago. Battery is about a year old and seems to be fine. Checked fuel pressure, which was fine. All fuses looked good. After some research, I thought it could have been the spark plugs, so I changed them today- no luck. Now I’m thinking it could be the starter or even the alternator..?

I’ve posted a video to in hopes someone can help me diagnose the issue. Thank you so much in advance!!

its not cranking too lively, can you give it a charge.

I would pull a plug and check for spark during cranking.
Old starters can generate RF which interferes with the crank sensor wire passing close by.

@jonesg thank you for your response. I’m new to most of this… sorry what does RF mean?

When I was a kid, it meant Rat Fink. I think he's referring to radio frequency.

Can you share more info concerning the battery you put in it a year ago? Brand, CCA, etc.?

Did Delaware experience the recently extreme cold weather the NE saw the last few days?

Explain how you determined the battery "seems to be fine"?

So it actually was the battery. I guess the cold weather last week completely drained the battery… I figured it was “okay” because lights were on, I charged it. I was completely wrong. Thank you everyone for your help. It was appreciated!

If you do a lot of short runs with everything on, the battery will drain faster than it charges back until you get to the point where the battery is too weak to turn the engine over and fire all the electrics needed to run the engine.

Trickle charger is the way to go.

I recently replaced the starter on my 08 S60 2.5T…pretty easy DIY job…if with battery fixed it still spins over slow worth considering changing the starter out. Mine showed plenty of wear at 150k miles.

I did one starter at night, in darkness, by feel. It is literally that easy. My wife was going to give a birth to our first child any moment, and the only car was rejecting to start =)

If you don't drive often, then a trickle charger is good to have. NAPA currently has one (12V and 1A trickle charger). for sale at $15.00...

If you can magically hook up a solar charger, then it is an option too.
