Can the inner timing belt cover be replaced with the engine in the car? It seems like it's supposed to wrap around the water pump housing, but after a lengthy struggle I can't get it in place. If you've put one in let me know what the trick is. Or, if you've put one on an engine that's out of the car, let me know what it's like, and whether it seems feasible (or not) to do it with the engine in the car.
I may have to trim the plastic a little, but the visibility is so poor I'm having a hard time figuring out exactly where to trim it.
thanks!

It can but the water pump has to be removed, at least of RN engines

I installed mine with the engine in the car, but as I recall somewhere around the water pump it was broken just a little.
I'm thinking maybe that lower tab.

I've got the water pump off. Does the coolant pipe have to be removed for this to fit properly?

Looking at your picture it looks like it might to clear the plastic tab behind the bracket at the top right of your picture. I fitted one years ago on an 850 and don't recall having to remove anything other than the timing belt and possibly the cam pulley gears. I may be wrong as it has been a long time, sorry.
The other option is to dress that corner enough to still hold it in place, but enough to get around the pipe?
Neil.
