Master Fastener list for White Blocks?

Post by WhatAmIDoing »

So I'm getting my long block prepped to go into my S70. It came with a box of parts, but almost no fasteners. Some fasteners wouldn't be too hard to buy or rob off junk motors (manifold bolts, accessories, etc), but others not so much. Ones that come to mind immediately are the thermostat housing bolts that go into the block, motor mount bracket bolts, upper torque bracket, etc. I've never opened a Haynes manual or any other sort, so not sure if they list the fastener specifics or just heads and torque? Or if there's another resource somewhere that would help me out. My current plan for fasteners I can't rob is to measure the hole depth and width with my calipers and just make a best guess. But if there is a resource available to keep me from guessing, that would be preferable.

I often grab a part number from the online parts store, then feed it into Skandix.de

About 80% of the time Skandix lists hardware by size m7x30

The 30mm refers to the distance from bottom of head to end of thread, in my experience

yes, a M7x30 would have a thread that is 30 mm long and had a nominal diameter of 7mm

Quick OT question: how are american bolts measured? I never really understood how that works.

The problem is some fasteners can be equal length and diameter but have different thread pitch. Coarse thread vs fine thread.

OP, I think you can purchase a set of metric "bolt identifiers" that have individual samples of each known bolt size/thread and then you can measure the depth with a caliper to build your want list. Also hardware store bolt may not have the same strength as the original manufactured bolts. But as abscate said you can find some of these bolts in diagram on several of the volvo parts websites.

Diameter and length, and the thread is TPI (threads per inch). So a 1/4-20 bolt is .25 inches in diameter, with 20 threads per inch, for whatever length. A 1/4-20 would be a course (regular) thread. I think fine thread is something like 24tpi? The thread pitch will be different for each diameter.

A metric thread pitch gauge can be quite handy. About $20 from mscdirect.com or mcmaster.com

On P80 and P2 cars Volvo hardware is made by Bulten in Sweden. They make really high quality stuff, much better than hardware store crap. Critical fasteners, use Volvo stuff

It’s natural to kvetch about a $3 bolt when they are 10 for a $ at Lowe’s, but one of them is steel while the other is silver cheese

Threads per inch is used for SAE fasteners. Metric is a bit different. Wikipedia shows a drawing and a chart. Measurement "P" would be the pitch. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_metric_screw_thread

Use quality fasteners from reliable suppliers for everything more critical than trim attachment.
Even airplanes have counterfeit parts problems. Recent news article talked about faked quality documents for many parts for several years from one UK supplier.
