2000 Volvo S70 Roof Rack

Post by tjmartin317 »

Hi all!

My crappy but ever-reliable S70 needs a laundry list of things. A CV axle, brakes, new suspension units for rallycross purposes, all the important stuff. And most if not all of those parts are sitting in my garage awaiting installation (this coming Monday evening). But to help motivate myself, I want to think about the roof rack/tire tray I want to fit to the roof.

Obviously this would be a lot easier if the car had roof racks from factory. But I’m looking for a good crossbar/tray combination that’d be able to haul 4 tires on the roof without just strapping them to the roof. Something like this:

Okay, maybe nicer than that. But it’s the right idea.

Furthermore, it’d be absolutely stupendous if it could find either the universal roof racks or the cargo tray on Amazon, I have a gift card that needs to be used. So while I’d just fire the parts cannon and hope it fits, I’d love some advice from others on here.

I also want to, eventually, upgrade the shocks and struts… but by god are they expensive, and they require you to press them all together. It’d be beautiful though…

Such a pretty part… I’m getting sidetracked. It’s late, hence why my brain is scattered. Talk to you all later!

I built the college kid rack out of about $16 of lumber rather than buy one, 48 semesters of private college tuition are up the luxury budget in those years….

Only 2 tiny issues with those. 1.) I already bought the blistein HD rears and 2.) these lowers the car, which for rallycross is suboptimal. The struts and springs I got make everything stiffer but shouldn’t reduce ride height.

I’ll explore the brand though, and they’re a cool orange so I’m already digging it.

I don’t even have the roof racks on the side is the issue. Just a flat, bare roof. So the lumber couldn’t be molded to fit anything. Hence the search for universal crossbars, and a somewhat nicer tire tray, to give it the “exploration vehicle” look… it’s more for style but it’s a practical upgrade!

I had a set of B6 on the front of my 00 V70R when I bought it 12 years ago. They only lasted about a year longer before I hit a frozen ice rut turning into my street. I was at snails pace to cross it but it blew out as they were so hard. I spoke to IPD as I was going to swap over and they recommended going for B4's for road use as the B6's are designed more for race tracks and they found them way too hard for daily use. I had found them 'jiggly' on our far from perfect roads.

You can get those racks for about $100 on eBay or from people here. The Volvo ones are nice and quiet.

The KONI's are for stock height and should work with stock height progressive or stiffer coils. We have Bilstein HD in the back and KONI STR.T up front on our 08 C30 T5 2.0 M66. This car has the factory Sports Suspension which is around 1.2 in lower than stock C30 coils.

What we found is the KONI provided a smoother front end steering feel besides smoothing out the road. Our Whiteline rear sway bar handled the oversteer. I would say the rear shocks won't change the dynamics as much, being Bilstein are good shocks to begin with. Unless the shock is bad, the different brands front and back shouldn't create wallow in turns.
.
