Urgent Help Finding Oil Leak

Post by BeerDeer »

Hi all.

I have a Volvo 96 850 (Automatic).

It always had a oil leak since I bought it and now I used Oil Saver from Liquid Moly and it loses while driving like 2 cups of oil. :(

Check: Image

The oil leak comes from driver side. Top part. Check: Image

Here´s a video (upside down) of oil "dripping"...

Where is it coming from?

Could be the rear main seal for the crankshaft. Can you take a picture or video further back under the car? When it is this close it is hard to see where you are pointing the camera.

Is it the rear camshaft seals? If it is, then have you checked for crankcase pressure? If not, I would do that urgently. Simple to do.

Rubber/latex glove. Remove the oil filler cap and use rubber bands to hold the glove in place over the oil filler hole.

Either start the car or have someone do it for you to make sure the glove does not come off.

If the glove lifts/inflates at idle then the crankcase (PCV) system is clogged and needs cleaning/relacing soon as it will blow all the seals out.

First to go are the cam seals or the crank seals or both.

If you rev the engine and the glove inflates further then you do have a big issue and it needs done ASAP.

If the glove does not inflate or when rev'd the glove looks like it is being sucked inward then this is not the issue.

Cam seals can go out without the PCV being clogged.

It’s coming ftom up high, so it’s probably just the cam seal

Check crankcase pressure s over per Neil.

Then it’s a $5 seal and two hours labour to fix , plus cleaning!

Thank you so much for your kind help and guidance. Unfortunately, I’m not very experienced when it comes to cars, so I’m unsure if the issue involves the rear camshaft seal or another component.

I spent about an hour yesterday trying to locate the source of the leak, and I was able to identify the area where it’s dripping. I’ve marked it on the attached picture for your reference. Access to the area is quite challenging due to cables and plastic obstructing the way.

I’ll perform the glove test as soon as possible to check for any crankcase pressure issues. If the glove test results indicate no pressure problem, what could be the likely cause of the leak?

Thank you. I will do this now and maybe take new pictures.

Hello,

Glove inflated... and I isolated the area further. There appears to be a persistent drip under a specific section. Please refer to the attached images for more details.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Best regards
