2004 XC70 Codes P0016 / P0340, Not Running

Post by patrm99 »

My Daughter's Volvo XC70 stopped running and needed a tow. I see codes P0345, P0340 and P0016. The car cranks but no start. I replaced the camshaft position sensor but nothing changed.
The timing belt looks in good condition, but is scheduled to be changed for the 2nd time in the next 10k. There is also a prolific oil leak below the timing belt which makes that area very wet. This may lead to poor timing belt conditions. The car has ~170k.

Is it a fair assumption that the belt skipped 1 or 2 teeth causing the no-start condition and the sensor codes BUT did not skip enough to destroy the engine as it cranks freely ? Ordinarily I would just change the belt and see if that fixes the issue, but the car is 400 miles away on my Daughter's College campus, so I need to drive there with tools and parts and do the work.

Any input would be very much appreciated.

I'd take a compression tester to make sure it didn't crash the valves before buying a bunch of parts.

Cam seals probably popped out, push them back, do a glove test and loosen the dipstick to relieve excess pressure for now.

Whilst it seems both cam sensors do not fail at the same time, they can, I don't know how but I just watched a video where someone got both those codes. .

400 miles is a far drive. I would rather pay for volvo dealer diagnostic to save yourself the trip(remember volvo offers free 25miles tow to dealer) so they can inspect what is wrong with starting issue. Or if no dealer around, look for credible mobile mechanic in the area and give him specific tasks of :checking the timing marks, 5v reference to the sensors and off course if he can start it-thats extra. Also I would not be 100% sure that it is seals that are leaking. At 170k your vvt solenoids can leak as well. Most likely for oil leak you will need camshaft seals, crank shaft seal, oil pump seal, inspect vvt hubs for wear. Check pcv system...sorry but volvo is not a college car especially with your being 400 miles away. Get her a corolla and it will be cheaper and reliable. Sorry for being doom and glum
