Air cleaner boxes '04 V70, 2.4 N/A

Post by SOURDOUGHJIM »

I changed the air filter for the first time and noticed the previous owner/shop did not seat the tabs on the lid into the slots of the lower box. The box and lid then, over time, took a set. Edge of lid pushed in, edge of box pushed out. It appears to still have an adequate seal on the filter but I found a reasonably priced box on ebay so I'll replace the lid and see how it looks.
My car has a box #9179373. Going by a couple of the Volvo parts sites, it should have the 8683093 which is what I got from ebay. It's very dusty from sitting in a wrecking yard warehouse. 8683093 has an additional safety filter between the filter element and outlet to the engine. My 9179373 does not have this. Is this safety filter available separately from the box assembly?

I'm wondering if this could be an import possibly from a dusty climate country as I can't find that filter listed.

Unless someone has different info to this, I'd just delete it. It is either that or ask Volvo for help. Can you see a part number on it anywhere?

I deleted it. The old lid had the screw bosses for that secondary filter but no screw threads visible, never been used. I put the newly acquired 8683093 lid on it this morning after a good cleaning. It appears to be sealing better. Being as I was working under the shade of a tree, I decided to wedge some wooden door shims between the filter box and fuse box to perhaps take out that deformity, over time,

on the lower box.

1) It's common to coax the bowed side of an air cleaner housing with a long screwdriver to get it to align with its lid.

2) One of the three latches had been broken on two P2 cars I bought...and I was the second owner! Lid alignment challenges many.

3) Could you post a picture of the safety filter whilst held up to the Sun?

George,
I can see sunlight through it. The camera didn't pick it up well. The element is sandwiched between two case halves that snap together.

That is an activated carbon filter for catching hydrocarbons from the intake manifold trying to escape and cause an evaporative emissions test failure on PZEV certified Volvos. It helped the entire vehicle pass the very strict PZEV SHED emissions testing. The last squirts of fuel from the fuel injectors and blow by gasses from the PCV system can migrate out the air intake system and into the environment. That filter was designed to capture the hydrocarbons in the same manner as the carbon inside the fuel tank carbon canister and then the next time the car is driven, release the hydrocarbons into fresh air to be burnt.

Your car should also be equipped with the PremAir radiator (viewtopic.php?t=99260) , a stainless steel fuel tank, and possibly a larger catalytic converter.

The PZEV requirements are to last a minimum of 150,000 miles or 15 years, whichever comes first. Trashing the carbon filter won't affect vehicle performance. New PZEV certified cars have eliminated the use (cost) of these filters with other tricks.

Thank you David. Mystery solved. That filter being an emissions related item never crossed my mind.

From the David post above: "The last squirts of fuel from the fuel injectors and blow by gasses from the PCV system can migrate out the air intake system and into the environment."

This is how the back of throttle plates get so gunked-up.
