My 1992 740 wagon sounds like a diesel...runs and drives awesome 194.000 miles uses very little oil..what or why does ot sound like a diesel

This is most likely the piston slap experienced by red block engines. For me it was the 90 through 92 engines. In 93 piston oilers were part of the engine and this got rid of most of the problem. Sounds bad but keeps on going. My 93 940 T is starting it at 201 K miles.

Just drive and enjoy. Only to rid the engine of the problem is a rebore and new pistons and that is expensive.
