head light

Post by pete nz »

Hi from New Zealand,
have recently purchased 1995 850glt with 150,000 miles .
Very impressed with car, has been looked after and seems almost like new.

Replaced coolant thermostat and fixed airbox thermo.
If the previous owner drove it now -after these simple fixes they may not have sold it
Also replaced bush on top of engine, easy once i got bits and pieces to make home made press.

Anyway this car was imported from the uk and always has the headlights on
i have put the little screw below the switch into the 10 o'clock position. This only seems to turn the back lights off.
Having headlights on all the time in nz not such a good look, although not the end of the world. Gas so expensive here any extra load on alternator not good (joke)

Any advice much appreciated
Pete

You may be stuck with this....I believe in the U.K. it is the law to have daytime running lights. Find a dealer and ask them....they may have a code to input to your car to turn them off, but I don't know.

The small switch with the screw head should be a 3 position switch that has three different settings. I'm not sure what clock position to tell you to go to but experimentation is easy enough to do.

Keep your eyes out for a 1995 in a scrap yard. The best way to get a new light switch.

The 1995 does not have any downloadable software, thank goodness.

The switch in the USA is 3 positions, 11, 12, and 1 o'clock, see what happens at 1pm...

Here's what I found on my U.S.-spec switch:

11:00 Setting: Switch operates in standard (non-DRL) mode
Position 1: Instrument Lights off, Running Lights off, Headlights off
Position 2: Instrument Lights on, Running Lights on, Headlights off
Position 3: Instrument Lights on, Running Lights on, Headlights on

12:00 Setting: Switch operates in modified DRL mode
Position 1: Instrument Lights on, Running Lights on, Headlights on
Position 2: Instrument Lights on, Running Lights on, Headlights off
Position 3: Instrument Lights on, Running Lights on, Headlights on

01:00 Setting: Switch operates in full DRL mode
Position 1: Instrument Lights on, Running Lights on, Headlights on
Position 2: Instrument Lights on, Running Lights on, Headlights on
Position 3: Instrument Lights on, Running Lights on, Headlights on

Tried all positions.
1 o'clock same as 12 o'clock on this model
11 o'clock only turns off back lights.

Guess i will look for a light switch at wrecker some time. Most models here will be for Australia / New Zealand market.

cheers

sorry but the law in england has nothing to do with lights being on, its in sweden that the lights have to be on all the time, and they are a swedish car, :)

On the backside of the switch, after pulling it out, there is an A,B,C switch. I forgot where I read that, perhaps OZBrick http://au.geocities.com/ozbrick850/ which is down again.
Try experimenting with that also. I believe it is Europe, USA, third world :)

The A-B-C switch on the back corresponds to the 11-12-1 positions on the front - rotating the front screw from the 11-12-1 position moves the slide switch through the C-A-B positions on the back. The A-B-C switch can't be adjusted manually as far as I can tell.

pete nz - I think you may be suffering from a U.K.-only 'dim-dip' lighting safety requirement (honestly, I'm not making this up!). Someone from the U.K. (moderator billofdurham, actually!) described it in another headlight related topic.
