Can you help me ID this part? 1994 850 turbo

While replacing my starter motor recently I found what seems to be a damaged part, but I have no idea what it is or does. I have attempted to attach a photo, but in case the photo doesn't show up I'll try to describe the "mystery part". It is a black cylinder, ~4.5 inches long by 2 inches in diameter, located on the top left hand (drivers) side of the radiator, under the intake hose for the air cleaner. Seems to be covered in rubber. There is an electrical connector, and it looks like a vacuum hose (more like a thin plastic pipe) runs through the length of the cylinder. In the photo, it is the part just to the left of the yellow handle for the tranny dipstick.
The pipe entering the lower end of this part seems to be damaged, and I have no clue what effect this has (or does not have) on my car. The rubber boot on the bottom of the part is also torn. If someone can ID this part for me and tell me what its function is I'd really appreciate it!

Based on your description it sounds like the EGR controller valve. If it isn't fixed it will cause the CEL to come on.

Hi Lee, I looked at a photo of the EGR controller valve and it doesn't look like the same part. Any idea how I post a photo here so others can see it? I've tried without success so far. Or if there are any photos of an engine compartment of the same model car, with various components identified, I can probably figure it out myself. There may be diagrams somewhere on this site but I haven't been able to find them.

It needs to be hosted, Matt has a deal with imageshack to do it. When you reply look below the reply dialogue box for the host it! button.

From there you should get a new window that spawns to imageshack. Once there select browse and go to the folder with the your pictures are and select the picture you wish to upload. Once selected press the host it! button on the imageshack window.

Once the image uploads it will give you a ton of options as to what to do with the picture. What you want to do is highlight - it is often a long link and you will usually need to slide the cursor across the Thumbnail for forums (1) link so as to get the entire link and then just directly paste it to the response/post. It deals with the the magic stuff to get the picture to appear.

If you then click on the thumbnail it goes full page and - for a bonus - It gives you some spam! I put up with the spam since it is a good way to exchange information.

Here is a larger photo of the mystery part. you have to click on the link but it will take you to the photo. The part is just to the left of the yellow dipstick handle, held in place by a strap attached to the radiator.

I'm stumped too, unless this is the EVAP valve (it's totally different on later model cars).
