Blue Smoke

Post by sjlevine »

Hey Everyone--
When I accelerate from a stop while my 1998 v70 non-turbo is warm, I get a huge puff of blue smoke out of the exhaust. A mechanic has told me that high mileage oil helps a bit (I do have 225,000 miles) by lubricating something inside the engine.
Any ideas for a real fix?

Thanks!

Scott

You are burning oil....I agree that a high mileage oil is probably a good idea.

So the question is, are there any great high mileage oils? I've used penzoil, and it hasn't helped much...
Additives?
Should I get rid of engine sludge?

With a warm engine problem like you describe the only real solution is new rings. The "high mileage" oils helps a bit with seals, particularly the valve seals, but they won't do anything for rings.

I suppose you could try something more aggressive like seafoam in the oil or Auto-RX but at the end of the day I've never had anything in a can or a bottle fix a motor problem.

I do use the Valvoline Max Life in my Jeep (211 K) and my Suburban (190 k) but the Volvos get either syn blend (194 k) or full syn (154 K). The Porsche (94 k) gets Advance Auto cheapo dino oil until its next change to get the crud out. It was parked for a few years.

You could try AutoRx treatment (do a google search)...plenty of info about it out there. I don't know which is better high mileage oil. I've always liked Mobil oil and they have a few out but don't know if they are synthetic or not. I don't think you want to switch to synthetic unless you're already running it.
