Car not starting

Post by hedyman »

I have a 1997 850T Yesterday my wife drove the car locally to a friends house. After a short while when she tried to leave the car wouldn't start. We never had this problem before. The AAA driver said it might be the fuel pump. This morning my wife tried to start the car again. Seemed to turn over fine. No start. About 3 hours later I tried to start the car and it started right up. I turned the car off and tried to start it again. Again it started but after a few moments it died. I couldn't get it to start again. Does anyone have any suggestions on the posible cause of this. Thanks, Bob

Try the fuel pump relay. A lot of people are having trouble with these as the temperature is dropping. Especially on the 850, after years of ownership the solder joints in the relay are starting to go bad as well as the capacitors. With the cooler temperatures, solder shrink away from the joints and cause an intermittent no-start condition. If the relay is completely gone, it's probably the capaciters. The relay can be taken out and repaired (see how-to in the repair database) or you can replace it. There is also a write up on how to test if it is bad by jumpering the pins in the relay holder. If this still doesn't work then you know your fuel pump is the problem and not the relay.
Here are the links to the write-ups:
