transaxle broken 1993 GLT 850 175000 miles drive rods trans

Post by Oahu1993 850 »

1993 850 GTL at 175,000 miles with no modifications, regularly repaired. Transmission fluid full and no sign of degradation. Car located in Hawaii on Oahu = Honolulu County with its below average road repair conditions.

Just had my car break down at a stop light. Grinding noise suddenly but then nothing further. The engine starts, runs. Shifting works in forward and reverse positions and Park. After sudden grinding noise, nothing further. Sounds like trans axle transaxle / transmission. A piece of what looks like casing broke off, maybe 1 1/2 " by 1 1/2 " onto the ground, but inspection can not see anything broken, probably because of the coverings on the underside of the car to keep mud and dirt out of the front end.

Before I pay to have the car towed forty miles and pay local Volvo mechanic to diagnose and estimate repairs can someone knowledgeable recommend what to check??? Also, front brake rotors need replacement, another $460.00 at repair shop.

Search here of the various php and 850 forums and came up with nothing for this. So though similar trouble has been addressed am unable to locate it.

Thank you for any help.

OK, my mechanic took a photograph. He said broken Drive Axle in 850 and similar models is very uncommon.

Cost of repair was about $735.00 parts and labor.
Replace Thermostat temperature sensor sender and the thermostat valve.
Replace battery, test the electrical charging system. Check electrical storage system for shorts
Tow truck, about 43 miles
Replace both front rotors and pads, "brake job."
Total, $1,650.

As an aside, the right CV boot has been torn for five years, and that was fixed when the Drive Axle was replaced, part of the axle assembly.

Hope the photo comes through. I changed it pixels/inch and resized in MS photo editor to make it a smaller file.

wow! ive never in my life seen a cv axle break at the spline/shaft area! what were you doing? 4x4'ing

on a serious note, with the proper tools, that isnt too hard to work on and replace. the hardest part is having air compressor and impact gun to take off the axle nut with a huge socket, usually about 32mm in size(not sure about this car though).

either way, thanks for the pic and the story...wow...

Oahu,
This is not a very difficult job that many can do at home without any special tools, other the a torque wrench. You can find excellent step by step instructions at BAY 13
Brake Job http://volvospeed.com/850fbrake1.php
Hub Replacement http://volvospeed.com/Repair/FWDbearingHub.php

If the front end is loose and noisy, consider replacing the lower control arms too, it comes with the ball joint pre-installed. If you need brakes, use nothing but OEM pads. Drilled rotors are better and not much more expensive (OEM rotors not necessary) For not much more it is easy to replace the front hubs and wheel bearings (combined unit).

Allow about 2 hours per side. Once the lower control arm is off, the only thing holding the axel in the transaxel are two bolts for something that resembles a carrier bearing, (less the bearing) & this is only on the RH side. Not used on the shorter LH side.

The parts can be found at http://www.fcpgroton.com/ ($700 for a
Wheel hub with bearings $110 per side
Control Arms w/ ball joints $65 per side
OEM Pads $61 for 2 sides (cheaper ones avail)
Zimmerman cross drilled rotors $73 per side)
Complete axel assemblies with CV joints $73 each side

You can get it all the parts for about $700. You can buy a lot of tools with the savings. Another good source for the parts is http://www.ipdusa.com/ . Both are very reasonable on shipping time and cost.

Oops, sorry, I realized before sending this that you did? have the work done already? I was not too clear on that. Anyway, maybe the information above can help some others.
