Are 98 V70 Ign Keys "Chipped" ?

Post by Bill S70 T5 »

OK, heres my prob, I have a 98 V70R AWD. Occasionally the Ignition key will just spin instead of starting the engine. feels like an anti theft thing?

So I got to wondering do these keys have any kind of chip or sensor in them. They look like just a regular type key with no obvious way to split them (some of the new type Chipped keys do !) and has my key gone bad? Oh yeah and did I mention, I just got this car a couple of months ago, only have one key and so can't diagnose the obvious way

It is an intermittent prob but seems to becoming more frequent and is just sitting in my drive (don't want to be stuck somewhere), I was going to get a spare anyway and may just go that route to see if it works?

I have good Battery (new) starters good, & electrics too. I've just replaced the electrical connector on the other side of the Ign key but it wasn't that as it worked the same after the replacement, then of course failed again. lol

Also tried the shiftlock button, but don't think it's that as I can't even get the key to the first "On" selection, it just rotates.

Any help would be appreciated this really is a fantastic web site for Volvo's

'98's aren't chipped. Later models are.
What you're describing is not all that uncommon on these cars and it's your ignition switch (key tumbler) that's going south. Most likely you'll have to change it out before long. It really has nothing to do with your key.

You can find it here (put part number M5050-136448 in the search window) for just under $50.00 :

Thanks, was thinking of replacing that part too, was next on my list after the key :? lol

Does the new barrel/tumbler come with a key? or, how does the tumbler recognise the old key? I'd always thought this was one of those Dealer only parts.
Not having taken it apart yet, I'm assuming maybe that the key passes through this tumbler before going into the actual lock part?

Although, I've already put the other side on, (elect Connector was fairly easy) and for $50 sounds like a good fix to me :D

Thanks again MiJ

I think only the tip of the key hits this part but I may be wrong. Anyway, you don't have to worry about what key once it's into this level. I'll try to dig up a how-to on changing out this part. There might be one already in the repair database. If not, I'll look at VADIS and post back if you need it.

Edit: Don't buy the part I mentioned just yet. I did a bit of searching and there's a write up on Bay13, the repair section of www.volvospeed.com for this (electrical) part, but what you describe is the mechanical part (the key tumbler which I mistakenly called the first part above), if it will turn around and around in the tumbler. If it's a wiggle and lights turn on or off or there is ignition or not, then yeah, the first part is correct but if the entire key turns around and around, you need the mechanical portion. It appears that this part is #8626325 and things may be a bit more involved as you apparently have to take the airbag in the steering wheel loose after disconnecting the battery (make sure you have your radio code). I looked on fcpgroton and foreigncarpartsonline.com but didn't see it.

This might be a dealer only purchase. Anyway, good luck and let us know what you end up doing to fix the problem.

Ok....found this in our own repair database (thanks Mom!):
https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/chat/p ... hp?t=13514

It is essentially the same as on your car- big difference is that you don't have to have things re-programmed after the swap like Mom had to have on his 2000 model S70.

Wow, thanks for all that work researching.

I think that I'm going to have to go to the dealer on this one, only because I need the car and time is limited, think it's going to cost me a few $ tho
I'd already replaced the electrical side of the switch during my fault finding, but it's becoming obvious to me that the Ign barrel is the prob. I'll let everyone know what the final outcome was (in bucks!) just incase someone else has to go this route.

The Tumbler is $179.00 and Install is going to be @250 to $300.. This was the cash I was saving for the IPD Short ram air kit, Perf Spark wires and MFD Ign Coil. Oh well looks like it's going to be in the summer time before that much cash becomes available again (boo hoo  )
