Steering Knuckle on a 1993 850 GLT with 187K

Post by DCintraining »

Hey Everyone,

I bit the bullet (I was hoping to wait until the winter) and put 4 new tires on my 850. I put on BFGoodrich Traction TA due to the excessive rain and snow we get here in upstate New York. (I should have gone to Chiropractic College in Sothern California!) I drove my 850 away from the tire shop and noticed the steering was a little more difficult, I attributed this to 2 things, 1) a slightly larger contact patch on the new tires and 2) a different rubber compound on the new tires. My wife proceeded to drive the car for the next week back and forth to work, about 100 miles a day. She complained of difficulty steering. I assumed that she was refering to the slightly stiffer handling and I told her (as sensitively as possible) to live with it.

I got in to the car on Sunday and nearly drove the car off the road (and was promptly told "told you there was a problem"). Here's the problem: when you turn the steering wheel 1/4 turn either left or right it feels like everything is binding up. Once past a 1/4 turn the wheel turns freely and binds up again as you reach another 1/4. I took the car back to the tire dealer and they said that the steering knuckle was binding up, they lubed it up and said if the problem happens again that it will need to be replaced. I did have the alignment done when I got the new tires and my father (who knows tires and steering systems) suspected the tire shop messed up the alignment and that the camber was horrifically off.

1. Does this make sense?
2. Has anyone else had this problem?
3. Has anyone replaced their steering knuckle and how hard was it?
3. Does anyone else have problems with their alignment? I have to have mine redone every 3-6 months.

Thanks for your help!
