I'm considering a 2003 S40

Post by AP »

I just test drove a 2003 VOLVO S40 with 120K miles on it. I'm getting a really good deal on the car but there are a few questions that I would like to ask here:

1. The original CD/radio does not turn on. It's totally dead and hopefully it's just a C.B. or something like that. Where are they located and witch fuse shall I check?

2. I'm getting a "clonking" sound from the front when I turn sharp left/right back and fourth at low speed. What can that be?

3. Annything else I should look for with this many miles?

Appreciate many answers. Thank you!

1. Fuse #9, 15 amps, in the passenger compartment fuse box covers audio and accessories. This is under the dash on the driver's side. Fuse #10, 20 amps, in the engine compartment fuse box covers audio. This is at the rear of the engine compartment on the driver's side.

2. This could one or more of several parts on the steering/suspension and without hearing the noise it is difficult to give a definite answer.

3. Service record? Have the timing belt and tensioner been changed? They were due at 105,000 miles. Also due at the same time were the auxiliary drive belt, PCV system clean (turbo only) and fuel filter. The last three, in themselves, are not too bad if they have been missed but it shows a well looked after car if they have been done.

Great info thanks a lot. This car has no service records whatsoever hence the low price. I'll make sure to have all that done a.s.a.p.

It may already have been done and an honest mechanic will be able to tell you by inspecting the belts.

So if I manage to get power to the Radio, it will ask for the code. I know the seller does not know it. How can I figure that out? Is the radio usless if I can't enter in the correct code?

In a word, yes!

However, all is not lost. Any Volvo dealer will supply the code if you provide the VIN and proof that you own the vehicle. Some dealers will do this over the phone others require a personal visit with the car or registration. This service is free. If the radio is a replacement then you will need to give the serial number of the radio.
