S60R AWD 2006 battery disconnected radio now front sp

Post by keating22 »

Hi everyone - I recently bought and installed an in dash cup holder assembly for my wife's s60R. Instructions dictated that i disconnect the battery as step 1. Upon completing the somewhat involved procedure to take out the storage compartment and replace it with the cup holder assembly, I reconnected the battery to find that the radio now only operates through the front dashboard speaker - the front and side speakers do not operate. I have an 2001 s40 wagon myself and i know it needs a code to make the radio operate again but this seems a little different as the radio works - just not most of the speakers. I saw no reference to a code entry procedure in the s60 manual (which i confess to not reading cover to cover). Does anyone know what's going on? thanks in advance. ~Jim

Welcome to MVS.
Unfortunately I have instructions for most things on an S60 up to model year 2005. The 2006 model could be different- but I'll check. I think you reset your radio and now it has to be told it has the other speaker- I'm pretty sure there's a sequence of buttons to do this on the radio face-plate. I'll take a look and post back. On the 2005 models (some of them) the rear speakers are through a different amp. I suspect your radio isn't enabled at this point to know it has an amp connected. Just for kicks (while I look) try locking and unlocking your doors with your key fob a couple of times to see if this makes a difference.

This may work- it might not:
With the key in position II (position III would be starting the car), turn the radio off...then, press and hold the on/off button for 5 seconds. "Transport mode" should be now be shown on the screen (what you do before pulling the radio out of your car for a replacement). Now turn your key off and back on to position II and repeat the above (what you do to enable the radio to the pre-set configuration of your car- programmed at the factory). Let's hope this works. Otherwise, you're in to a trip to the dealer. After disconnecting your battery in these cars, when you reconnect it, it should always be reconnected with your key in position II...otherwise, strange things can happen, like what you are experiencing- worse, you could even ignite the SRS (airbag light) or have non-functioning seats, sunroof, etc. I suspect that you didn't know about key in position II when reconnecting and the radio being only partially functional is the result. If none of the above work, you could try a battery disconnect again, but this time, when you connect it back, do it while the key is in position II and see what happens.

thanks MIJ I tried both things you suggested to no avail - I should mention that the instructions that came with the volvo in dash cup holder did not mention reconnecting the battery with the switch in position two - an error I hope will have some currency with my local volvo dealer since i followed the enclosed instructions to the t that volvo provided with the part. It seems a bit of overkill to have such devastating security in place over a radio - what happened to the simple 4 digit code re-entry that i can do on my 2001v40 wagon and 2001v70? I heard most thieves go for the platinum in the converter over a radio any day...

Yeah, I hear you.
I hate it for you, but it certainly looks like a trip to the stealer for you. However, with your car being a '06, isn't it still under warranty? I would definitely stay with the "I followed Volvo's instructions to the 'T'" line. Maybe they will treat you right- I certainly hope so.

There is no such security in place on the AUM (Audio Module; i.e. the radio). On startup, the AUM polls the CEM and checks the Car Configuration File and Structure File; if the radio's serial is in the CCF and the p/n's in the Structure File match, it enables itself. The fact that it's working means that there is no security problem.

This, in fact, sounds like an actual problem that is related to pulling the battery cable, perhaps related in time, perhaps otherwise. In fact, I think your secondary amplifier has a problem. The radio itself (the AUM) connects to the center speaker only(!) while the amplifier connects to all other speakers--which is what your problem is, sound only from the center. Is it possible your work dislodged any wires? There's a coax cable between the radio and the amplifier, this might've gotten loosened? If you're sure all cables from the AUM weren't disturbed; check fuse 11C/11, it's in the dash (see attached PDF).
