S60 D5 SE 2002 ERROR CODE P0244

Hi All,
When driving my S60 D5turbo recently I have been noticing a pulsing feel to the power delivery. Yesterday on the way home from work, this has got worse, and red warning triangle came on on the dash. My friend read the OBD code, "P0244" which says generic turbo/sup wastgate solenoid A range/performance.
When this is happening, very dark smoke comes from the exhaust, any clues?

You might have a failing Turbo Control Valve. IPD has an aftermarket replacement: http://www.ipdusa.com/Volvo-S60/Engine/ ... -395-4235/

Very dark smoke indicates an extremely rich condition.

sounds pheasable, thannks.
Is there anyway I can test if this valve is operating correctly, or is it a case of replace and try??
