How to check engine mounts

Post by dan2286 »

I am getting a random clunking noise from the front end every once and a while, just a single clunk, not multiple. I think it usually happens when I let my foot off of the gas, press the gas, or hit a bump. There is a lot of new front end components on my car like new struts, spring seats, strut mounts, tie rod, control arm, sway bar end links, and everything else is still good. I am thinking that it would leave the motor mounts as being bad. This car has almost 300,000 miles and I am almost sure that the mounts are all original. What should I look for on these?

This is a 94 850 N/A 5 speed.

As you have replaced so many of the front end parts, perhaps we can assume the noises are coming from the upper engine mount and firewall mount. A visual check, and you should be able to see deteriation of the rubber in the mounts. If you look in the repair section you will find the " how to". To see the firewall mount, the wiper cowel has to be removed as well.
You will also find that as you replace one or two mounts, the others will start to deteriate, if they have not already and they will need to be replaced. Some are ......most are bears to replace but they can me done . There are also posts for the lower enginemount replacement as well as the tranny mount, which may also me giving your clunk and maybe slightly hard shift.
