v70 XC, 2000, Needs an Angle Gear

Post by proinfo57 »

Recently my v70 XC blew a angle gear, (transfer case). I am told it is because I used my spare tire and the tire sizes did not match. I ran the spare for about 10 miles before all H--l broke loose.

A repair shop has the car and they are a 180 miles from my home. I located a transfer case locally and when the mechanic tried to install the unit he said the unit was too long and would not fit.

Has anyone had to replace a angle gear and might know how to get a replacement, (other than Volvo).

Volvo gave me a # 8601587, (angle gear).

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks,
Tom

Welcome to MVS,

The angle gear / bevel gear is a high failure rate item and - as you have found out - it is expensive. That is a bad combination since the junk yards rarely have a good one and if they do they too are proud if it.

You might want to try erievovo.com or there is an outfit called Toms on ebay that salvages a lot of Volvos. If the only choice is new try calling Darrell Waltrip Volvo at (800) 689-0021. Ask for Jamie or Don. They sell OEM parts at a substantial discount.

Lee,

Thank you for the note. Don at Waltrip Volvo was very helpful, and did offer the best price on a new unit. Erievovo was helpful also. He did not have a unit in stock but pinged other used parts dealers and located a source, (veldmansautoparts.com). I can source a used one for $.750.00, That is about half the cost of a new unit. I may roll the dice and go with the used unit.

Are there any other issues that I should prepare for after the repair?

Tom

Again, I appreciate the note, it ultimately led me to a source!
