A/C compressor clutch seizing up...1993 960 wagon-Aarrgh!!

Post by msamyrox »

Hey everyone...thanks for all of the suggestions! I replaced the serpentine belt, and the car definitely seems to have more power. The fluid levels are all good, and I continuously monitor them. I am leaning toward the spark plug wires, their connections and/or the plugs themselves as possibly causing the faint 'ticking' noises. In neutral, if the accelerator is pressed, the noise goes away... so I thought it may possibly be something to do with misfiring...?? I do believe, also, that I've discovered the source of the fluid mess. The A/C compressor is 'spitting' fluid as it turns, and the clutch is seizing up. I'm 99% sure that it has to be replaced, because of the fluid leak, the air conditioning losing power with acceleration, and it's failure to blow cold air on demand. Is there any way I can replace the seals inside the compressor, or do I need to buy one? Anybody have input or advice? I am very grateful for the help I've gotten here...I feel like I'm getting to know this car a lot better!!
One final issue: I'm fairly sure that the previous owner adjusted the idle to hide the compressor leak. I say this because when the air is off or the heater is turned on, the idle will not go below 11...where as, if the A/C is on, the car idles at about 7.5... ideas??
THANKS AGAIN!!! Amy

You can replace the seals if you have some very special tools and know what you are doing. You would probably better off to buy a new or rebuilt replacement, though, due to the cost of the tools. Once you open the system you will have to have it vacuumed and recharged. You should probably have the dryer replaced also.
