About a month ago, my car started having intermittent starting issues. At one point, it wouldn't even start with the cables connected--but my friend giving me the jump asked if he could try to start it. He succeeded in doing so, telling me that he'd just pushed the key really hard into the ignition. He said I may be having ignition issues. I had the car towed to a place and they ran it on the diagnostic computer and apparently fixed something and got it running. I picked up the car and drove it a bunch that night, noting that one of the dashboard backlights had gone out. The next morning, it didn't start.
An electrician friend of mine came over--he tested the alternator and found it was dead. We got my car started using a plug-in battery charger and then I let it charge for awhile. Later, I started my car and got about 60 feet down the road before the car died--it never started with a jump again. We figured the battery had died because all the jumps and driving on a dead alternator had compromised it.
So we swapped out the alternator and the battery, and got a new voltage regulator for the alternator. It would not start. I am a definite amateur when it comes to these things, but I'm pretty sure we got the thing hooked up correctly. I wonder if there's some further electrical issues. I plan to take it to a mechanic in a week, but wonder if anyone has had similar issues.
New alternator, voltage regulator, battery...won't start.
