CAR SHUT OFF!
it is so annoying....I have a 94 850 GLT auto. with 150xxx...the car overall is in a decent condition, but I'm having a problem with the car shutting off. It just completely shut down while at WOT and sometimes at 2-3000rpm around turns. I'm not throwing any engine code or check light. It idles fine, the car works great ,but it has a phantom shut off thing. I've notice it does it more often when I put premium grade gas (though, isn't 92 oct. and above is recom.?) fuel injector? fuel pump? ecm? dealer has no clue whats wrong? help!

Help!
me too!
I've had my 1993 850GLT shutting off sporadically for months now. My mechanic changed the cam sensor last week ($300) and now it is worse. It used to happen only in the first 20 minutes of driving. Now it happens at all differet times and more frequently!
I also have an SRS light on, and my dial for the heat distribution got stuck last month, but the mechanic says these are all unrelated.

let me add my woes to yours. our recenly purchased volvo also has an engine that shuts down at random. we have changed the fuel filter, some electrical relays and still no luck. i am no engineer, so i am sending the car back to a volvo dealer to see if he can do better
any advice will be warmly welcome

update...
last week the volvo dealer determined he felt pretty confident it was the fuel pump. I would love to keep driving this car, so I agreed to what he estimated would be a $500 repair.
$700 later, it still shuts off while driving......

Sounds like a faulty throttle position sensor or a bad fuel pump relay. Oh, and you need a new mechanic. A brand new OEM fuel pump is $295. It takes no more than an hour to put one in and can be done by anyone with common sense and some hand tools.

I would like to make Matthew a suggestion; Why not round up all the people who have these shut down problems. It seems that many are suffering with this and it is very dangerous at times. Then Volvo might take notice and try to rectify whatever the fault is. C'mon Mat, show us your true colours and give us a hand here.

My 93 850's cmp sensor died during the final test drive after having the transmission replaced a couple of weeks ago. Odd, especially as it has no moving parts. Several hundred $'s later and I'm going again. uggh.
A newer Volvo (1998+) is looking better and better every day.

Strange. My 94 850 just did the same to me yesterday. That's my first. Lucky it was just a small street, not the freeway.
Sorry but I don't quite understand some of the abbreviation:
cmp sensor = camshaft position sensor?
while at WOT = while at working overtime?
And what's the deal about these "supposed fixes" but don't fix anything? Ain't you entitled to some sort of "warranty it'll work"? It just seems like a cheap way for these shops to make money: tell you to replace the whole car, bits by bits, until by chance they stumble onto something.
