starter replacement
starter replacement
'95 850 turbo wagon -- I think starter motor is faulty since it fails to engage from time to time. Or it engages and then disengages before the engine is running. I have new starter to put in. Please tell me how to find the darn thing in the engine compartment, and since I can't even find it is this a job that is "impossible", meaning a lot of stuff has to be taken out to get to the starter? Thanks! ccb222

Starter is under the intake manifold. You have to remove the manifold to get to the starter. If you have the right tools, it'll take an hour tops to pull it. Also, while the manifold is off, you should check out the oil seperator box down there and make sure it's not clogged and spray it out real good with some carb cleaner.

According to the Chilton manual it looks pretty straightforward (doesn't it always). They don't show removing the manifold, but if you must there is a sort of hidden center bolt you have to look for. Let us know how it goes since I may have to do this one some day also.

I was able to R&R my starter with out the Intake Manifold being removed. I removed the clean air intake from the air box to the Throttle Body, the IAC from around the Throttle Body. I also need to remove the Cooling Fan from the car. I was able to see most of what I needed to do to R&R the starter. And the best part is I did not have to worry about getting the Intake Manifold cleaned and sealed back up. And everything I removed was held in place with just a screw.
During the install I found that it was important to tighten up the nuts and bolt of the support bracket last and a little at a time. I did not do this and I had to readjust to get the starter to stop dragging when started. I had put a twist in the starters knickers.
Happy Wrenching, Da
