New Radiator Recommendations

Post by mvsnole »

I need to replace the radiator in my 99 v70 xc turbo AT and I have a couple of questions. I have been reading and it seems that many feel the Behr radiators are more reliable than the Nissens version. I checked fcp & ipd as well as the other sponsored sites, but could only find the Nissens :( I found the Behr at Autopartswarehouse.com for a lot less than the Nissens are selling for ($151). Here is the item: http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/sku/V ... Drivetrain . Has anyone dealt with this site? Anyone found a Behr somewhere else?

The other question is that my engine is a turbo, but my radiator only has 2 oil inlets on the driver side. Most of the parts sites show that this is a non turbo radiator. They show the turbo version having oil inlets on both the drivers and passengers sides for a total of 4 inlets :?: :?: :?:

I don't want to order the wrong part, so I really appreciate the help.

VADIS is showing auto trans cooling on the driver side and engine cooling on the passenger side. If your car is set up different you may want to check to make sure someone didn't replace it with a manual transmission radiator.

I would check the auto trans to see if it has output lines to the cooler that have been spliced together.(AT fluid routed back to trans)

If your trans does not have lines for cooling ( that would be a new one- please post a pic) you can always safely plug the trans cooler openings in the radiator and not worry.

I show only one trans for your vehicle if its a1999 XC At turbo and it shows cooling lines for the trans.

I have 99 V70 XC. I replaced my radiator about two months ago with one off eBay seller. Looks same, but not 100% same.

Radiator has two oil cooler connections on driver side.
Upper radiator hose attach to the passenger side top and hooks up to the engine Thermostat housing.
Bottom radiator hose attach to the driver side at the bottom.

From the experience, make sure to verify the all the outlets/inlets on the radiator.

The small overflow outlet on top of the radiator to the reservoir tank is often not on the radiators of other manufacturer.
You will want to make sure to contact the seller to verify that their radiator has all in the correct locations.

Also make sure that it has correct mounting locations and same thickness.

The job will take a few hours. Mine took a whole day because of two nuts welded on to the front frame and hidden under "L" shape brackets on both sides of the radiator. And incorrect thickness that required for me to bend flanges at the bottom to fit the fan on.

I do have VADIS. It helps, but not completely.

If you have done PCV job on the car before, it will make it a little easier by removing the cooling fan and housing.

It is not a complete one person job. You will need someone to help holding the things together (intercooler, AC condensor, radiator all there in the same place). Intercooler comes out together with radiator. not very light.

if you need more details on the job such as other necessary parts etc, let me know.

Thanks for the responses. The cooler lines I have are tranny lines, just like the diagram JD posted (thanks!). I do not have any oil cooler lines coming into the radiator. Pattern- is your v70 turbo? I wonder if they made a mod in the middle of the 99 year?

Also, has anyone had any dealings with Autopartswarehouse.com? I would rather deal with one of the sponsor sites, but I can't find a Behr rad anywhere else and the price is good.

Thanks for the help.

I have never used the autopartswarehouse but I remember some folks being very upset. I am sure someone will speak up. I would see if any of the vendors above would price match on the same rad. Never hurts to ask.

The newer models have an oil cooler on the back of the oil pan. Perhaps thats is where yours is.

Mine is just like the one in the VADIS diagram posted by JDS60R.

there are two Transmission Oil cooler lines. they are both on driver side. The one on top is from transmission to radiator (oil cooler), one at the bottom (right above bottom radiator hose) is return line to transmission.

As far as I know, all the XC lines are Turbo & AWD (yes, mine is turbo also).

You should keep the green oil line clips in hand, just in case it breaks while pulling the lines out. Mine broke, but I bought some extra, so wan't a problem.

the radiator replacement posted above (VADIS) doesn't say anything about removing the brackets first before being able to remove the bolts holding the radiator from the bottom.

I haven't purchased from the site that you listed, so I can't comment on them.

Check the price of an OEM at TascaParts.com. Their price might be a tad higher than Nissens or Behr. I have installed an OEM and Nissens. While the Nissens was good, the fit and construction of the OEM was visibly better and I would go to OEM next time.

You do not have the oil cooler lines because these V70XC are low pressure turbo (LPT).
(correction: it has no cooler lines b/c configuration changed not LPT).

Their reputation is like their prices, the cheapest out there.

Here is some discussion for which radiator to buy:
