Subframe O-Ring Confusion

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Subframe O-Ring Confusion

Post by 240S80 »

This may seem obvious to some of you, but I've not been able to find the answer.

I bought the rear subframe o-rings and bolts to fix the clunking in the front end of my 99 S80. When I lowered the subframe, I saw that there was already an o-ring on each side of the rear subframe, and they were in great shape. This could mean one of three things:

1. The o-rings have already been added by the previous owner and I don't need to do anything else
2. I should replace the existing o-rings with the new ones
3. I should add the o-rings to the ones that are already there, so that there will be 2 stacked on top of each other.

Not sure what to do here, but I suspect number 1. Is the procedure in the service bulletin written from the perspective that the o-rings were never there to begin with?

If you already have it apart go ahead and change the o-rings. Also check those rear subframe bushings for cracking or separation of the rubber to the outer steel sleeve of the bushing.

There are a number of things in the front end that can cause clunking and these are what I'd check next:
1. Strut tower brace bolts. Check the bolts that go to the top engine mount and also where the brace bolts to the top of each strut tower. 3 bolts on each side. My car had the largest bolts come loose. Loctite and re-tighten.

2. Spring seats or top mounts on the strut

3. Sway bar endlinks

4. loose brake caliper

5. loose steering rack
