Air Pump Check Valve

'98 V90 - I'm curious... what specific purpose does the air pump check valve do? This is the silver do-hickey mounted on the intake, fed by the air pump. Can this be a major culprit in the intermittent A/C issues?

The air pump and its non return, or check, valve are parts of the emissions control system and have nothing to do with the AC.
