Stalling, won't restart for 15 or 20 minutes

Post by Swedeseed »

Good day all, I have an '88, 740 GLE (Gas). The car is a fantastic drive. I'm having a somewhat unusual problem though.
It runs great for a day or two then for no reason at all, it will stall while going down the turnpike @ 65. (?), Then, it won't restart for about 15 or 20 minutes.

Any ideas? I have read a similar problem could be the Flame Trap or Evap Canister. There is a little plastic, translucent, "tube" like canister in the line, in the engine compartment, driver side, top near fire wall. It looks like it has little black particles in it. Gas doesn't seem to flow through this line, so, I'm at a loss as to what this is.

I know there has been other posts, but I've yet find any that explain what an EVAP canister looks like or where it is, or what this little platic, inline fitler is.

Thanks in advance for any help on this! :D

You didn't mention which type of ignition system you car has. My 88 760 Turbo Wagon has Bosch ignition and it died and would not restart one day. The cause was the ignition module (ignition amplifier).

The evap canister stores the fumes from the fuel system when the engine isn't running, and then allows the engine to burn the fumes when the engine is running. This is my understanding of the system. If this is not correct, I am sure that someone will comment.

Swedeseed, welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

Lummert's description is what the evap system does but the attached gives a little more detail, including maintenance which is invariably never done until something goes wrong.

I would also suspect the ignition amplifier. Is the car fitted with a tachometer? If it drops to zero as the engine cuts out it is most likely the ignition system.

I had a chevy truck that did this and eventually tracked it down to a bad coil.
