65' 1800 steering wheel removal.

Post by davef98208 »

Hello all, I just bought my first 1800 after seeing one 2yrs ago and falling in love. I got a 1965 P1800s with good bones but has issues. The first one, that I can not figure out, is I need to remove the steering wheel to access the turn signal switch. My question is does the horn button pop/pry off or is there a secret removal I can not see? Can you recommend a good repair manual.

According to the Haynes Owners Workshop manual, you should do the following:

1.Disconnect the battery for safety reasons.
2. make a note of the horn lead connections on the steering box and disconnect the leads.
3.Carefully prise off the horn button with a knife.
4.Carefully bend back the lock washer and with a suitably sized socket uncscrew the steering wheel nut.
5.Using a pencil or scriber mark the relative position of the steering wheel hub and inner column to assist refitting.
6.using the hands behind the spokes, thump the steering wheel from the inner column.
7.If necessary the hub and housing mahy be separated from the steering wheel.
8.Refitting the steering wheel is the reverse sequence to removal. The securing nut should be tightened to a a torque wrench setting of 25-32 lb.f.ft (3.5-5.0 kg f m) and then bend up the lock tab.

ALSO from the VOLVO SERVICE MANUAL1800
the following:
1.Pull out the horn cable from the junction block on the steering box.
2.Carefully remove the horn button with a screw driver (prying it up)
3.Bend up the locking washer and remove the steering wheel nut. Mark the position of the steering wheel.
4.Pul of the steering wheel. unscrew the housing and hub from the steering wheel.
5.Fit the new steering wheel and other parts in reverse order, observing the markings. Tightenthe steering wheel nut to a torque of 20-30 lb.ft. (2.8-4.2 kgm) and then lock it.

Here is the SERVICE MANUAL page on the TURN SIGNAL:
1.Remove steering wheel.
2.Unscrew the screws which hold the switch casing (the 3 obvious ones when you pull the wheel)
3.unscrew the jacket tube screws and pull this up so that switch screws are accessible.
4.Unscrew the 2 screws which hold the switch to the jacket tube.
The position of the switch is adjusted by turning the jacket tube.

That's the best I can do. Hope this helps

Were you successful with the turn indicator switch. I have the same probem with a 65 1800 and am having trouble locating the two screws which hold the jacket tube in place.
