1990 240dl I need advice

Post by steelbox »

Hi
My nephew is looking at a great looking 90 240. It has 270,000K and the asking price is 3k. I live in San diego and he's in L.A. any advice to pass on to him about what to look for or should he not buy because of high miles ( no records ). Thank You

I don't know if car prices are higher in CA, but this is top, top dollar. For that price I would expect to be dealing with an owner who has metculously cared for the vehicle for the past several years and has a box full of receipts to prove it. Also would expect the car to look/feel brand new and need nothing. If this is the case, I would not be overly concerned about the mileage as these engines run forever. That said, if it is an automatic I would definitely want to know the service history on the tranny as this is probably the one thing that could fail and make this a financially painful deal.
Check some prices on craigslist to get a better handle - I am sure there are lower mileage vehicles out there with good history records for less money.
If he goes ahead with this purchase, have the car pre inspected by a good Volvo mechanic. Good luck.

Thank you for the advice. I thought it was a lot of money. I'll pass it on.

I paid $500 for a 1990 740 wagon in decent running condition.
$1000 is about the most I would pay.
