Volvo Repair Database Abs control module repair for 2004 s80

Post by Crawfish »

I have read the great 21 pages on this repair in another forum on this site. I am inspired to attempt the same repair on my 2004. Most of the posts, however, seem to pertain to slightly older model cars than mine.

Will an abs module repair work on a 2004 s80 ?

( The dealership wants $1221.00 for a new module, plus $200 install, plus $200 to reload software.)

Thank you.

you are in a hot climate and the older ones began to fail at 6and 7 years so it is surely a possibility.

Yes I believe it is broken. (good point about the heat.) I have all the classic signs: "brake failure" "stop safely", odometer and cruise not working.

What I'm wondering is can I take it out, open it up, and fix it by soldering as described on this site for some slightly older models?

Thanks for the response.

The internals are completely different than the earlier modules that can simply be resoldered.

The only place I know of that repairs them is Xemodex.

Thanks for the response Mr. Moo. I found the site for xemodex. It's a little more expensive than I had hoped but still cheaper than a new one. I think I'll have them fix it.

Has anyone out there had any experience working with them?

I also have all the classic signs: "brake failure" "stop safely", odometer and cruise not working.
I had it at 3 different repair shops who could not fix it. Unable to communicate with computer.
1 dealer is asking $1600 for repair.. the other $1221 for part plus $275 for install and software.
If I use Xemodex for the part where/how do I get the s/w reload?
Xemodex website states: "When installing 2002-2009 Volvo ABS brake control module software a download must be preformed."
Has anyone found a workable complete solution without paying the dealer's prices?

Hey rhill, I sent my module from my 2004 s80 to xemodex in Canada. I just got it back today and I may put it in tonight. It cost 450 to repair it. I hear you don't need to reload the s/w if it's your module. I'll post again as soon as I get it in and let you know.

Ok here is the update: I put in the repaired module by xemodex and took the car for a drive (2004 s80). The odometer started working again. The cruise now works again. The warning lights relating to the brakes "stop safely , brake failure" are now gone. I assume the abs works and I'll probably test it in a parking lot next time it rains.

There was a check engine light on but that even went out on the second test drive.

The only light I now have is the "time for regular service" warning that comes on when the car is started. Also a "fill wiper fluid" light came on. So it looks like the module repair worked without loading the software.

This fix cost me $450 instead of $1200 plus install and software for another $200 at the stealership.

By the way, xemodex has a nice lady that answers the phone and emails named karie. And she put me on the phone with a technician named chris who answered some questions for me.

The "e-5" socket is available at oriely's auto parts. But they will have to get it from their warehouse. Took a day. Cost about 3 bucks.

Good luck on your problem.

Did I miss something? What is an "e-5" socket and what is it used for?

The E-5 socket is the female torx socket that you need to take Out the bolts that hold the module to the car. It's a hard tool to find. You can find sets that go from E6 to E-12 and a separately sold E-4 but they don't usually have the E-5 in the store. Like I said oriely's can get it from the warehouse.
