Suspension Issues

Post by SAM2 »

Just got my PVC trap fixed by the dealer and also discovered that my front wheel bearings are bad/need replacing.
I'd like to know if anyone out there has had success replacing the front bearings themselves. I replaced the half-shafts on my old 2000 S40 but never had to touch the wheel bearings. My Haynes manual is telling me that I'll need a special Volvo tool (#9997090) to remove the wheel bearing from the spindle/carrier whatever assembly is referred to. Do I really need this tool? Anyone have luck doing this themselves?

Also need to replace the front right-side strut because it's leaking ... should I replace both front struts as a pair?

Doing some more research, this will not be a total DIY job. You need a hydraulic press to remove the hub assembly from the spindle. So I need to find a garage that would be willing to do this ... still looking.
I ran into another question though - I had been looking at OEM wheel assemblies because of the great price difference between oem/non-oem. I don't want to put junk on my car to have to do this all over again in 30K. But ... I ran across a Moog hub assembly @ Advanced that come with a 3 year warranty + a 15% discount. Anyone out there with experience (good or bad) with Moog parts?

Hi, SAM2....Just checking how you made out with the front wheel bearings...I'm in the same situation (gonna hit 120,000 this week), realize it ain't a DIY job, but want to avoid going to the dealer to do it for $250+ parts (per side) plus probably $400 or so for labor (My mechanic says his computer shows well under 2hrs per side, so I was thinking "may as well buy aftermarket parts - Timken, Beck & Arnley, Moog - BOTH sides for $250+/- parts, and about $300 labor" )....I saw the deal with the Volvo special tool (9997090...$160+) in my Haynes manual, and wondered if it was r-e-a-l-l-y necessary...Will talk with my mechanic next week when I get a couple tires installed, and assume that he has a good, complete set of W/B tools that'll handle most FWD cars, but I wouldn't mind knowing beforehand how you made out. (Or someone else who was in the same boat)...Happy New Year.
