overdrive switch

Post by poppycorn »

Hi I'm new here and to Volvo's so ANY help would be great
Every now and then after driving for a while, and turning the car off, when I restart overdrive is engaged.best I can do is about 70ks ph till I manage to get it dis engaged
Arrow light on dash.
Overdrive is something I have never, and will never use.
To disable it permanently, could I cut the wire on the overdrive switch on side of transmission.
If this won't work, how can I disable it permanently
thanks in advance

The arrow light indicates that the fastest you can go is 3rd gear, and that overdrive is disabled. Common causes for the problem you're having are the OD relay and OD solenoid.

Sounds like you want to leave OD permanently on, and permanently disable the function that allows you to lock out OD and stay in 3rd gear [for towing or mountain driving].

I'm not sure if cutting the solenoid's wire would fix it—actually, I think you'd be stuck in 3rd gear that way.

This overdrive bypass kit from IPD could help, although it's specifically for the AW-70 and -71 transmissions. I'm not clear on which 940s had the AW-72, or whether the kit will help in that case.

And there's more information here, including a DIY version of the IPD kit—

Cutting the wire won't solve the problem. Diagnosing the solenoid and relay are covered on the forum.

The information I have is that the AW72 was only used on the 16 valve models - B234F and B234G in right hand drive.
